Balanan Lake in Siaton and Sibulan’s Twin Lakes Balinsasayao and Danao are the centerpieces of Negros Oriental’s biggest and most important ecotourism sites. Other widely-known lakes are Nailig, Halawig and Yagumyum on Mt. Talinis, Valencia; and Kinayan in Guihulngan. The Tirambulo Highland Resort was developed around seven man-made lakes in Paniabonan, Mabinay.

Sidlakang Negros Village

Sidlakang Negros Village was born out of a felt need for a site that would stimulate tourism development and agricultural endeavors in the Province’s 25 LGUs, preserve the Province’s cultural heritage, foster stronger multi-sectoral involvement in the communities, and bring all these activities together for a year-long exposition that domestic and international visitors could come to for an endearing Negros Oriental experience.

Sidlakang Negros Village institutionalizes these objectives by providing a permanent venue for trade and tourism exhibitions and cultural activities.

Back in 1988, as the Province neared its Centennial Celebration in 1990, then Gov. Emilio C. Macias II opened a showroom and gallery of Negros Oriental arts and crafts products that was christened Sidlakang Negros, or eastern Negros. Sidlakang Negros Village amplifies that concept in an enduring form.

A homeplace that will welcome visitors in all seasons. A central trading post for the Province’s producers and entrepreneurs that is open for business all year round.

Strategically set on a lush tree-shaded hectare just off the National Highway, the Village comprises 26 modules where each of Negros Oriental’s 19 municipalities and six cities can showcase their choicest tourism assets and agricultural products, investment potentials, and their finest goods and services.

The Village harks back to its precious history by dedicating one module to its former sub-Province of Siquijor, which has responded with eager participation.

A three-module Wi-Fi wired building houses the office of the Sidlakang Negros Village Management Board, the Provincial Tourism Office and the Sidlakang Negros Showroom, a one-stop shop of Negros Oriental arts, crafts, delicacies, souvenir and pasalubong items.

The Village structures, of modern industrial materials such as steel and glass, are endowed with grace by cogon thatches and bamboo, a charming salute to native architecture.

A stage and open-air auditorium provides space for performances.

A theme park. A trade center. A home for the Negros Oriental artist and artisan.

Sidlakang Negros Village celebrates Negros Oriental talent and creativity, arts and crafts, cultural events, and other valuable products to be shared with locals and visitors alike, with pride.

Dumaguete Belfry

The best-known landmark in the Province, the Campanario was built to serve as belfry and look-out tower during a time of frequent moro raids. It has four graduated levels, each succeeding story smaller than the one below it. Fray Jose Manuel Fernandez de Septien completed the two lower levels in the 1760s. In the 1870s Fray Juan Felix de la Encarnacion added the third and fourth levels, and three buttresses to protect the tower from earthquakes. Excluding the buttresses, the Campanario stands on approximately 154 square meters in the southeastern corner of the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria compound, rising 20 meters to the tip of its small dome. It is circular in shape, made of cut coral stone, mortar and brick to take advantage of the insulating quality of the material. The biggest and also the oldest bell in the Campanario is dated 1818. A second bell is marked 1932, and is dedicated to St. Joseph the Patriarch. The third bell is inscribed 1933 in honor of the patron, St. Catherine of Alexandria. The smallest bell is dated 1936, a gift from the Honculada family.

The Boulevard

The promenade by the bay is Dumaguete City’s tourism hub. Built up beginning 1916 the 780-meter strip, shaded by venerable old trees, has green lawns, benches and ornate park lamps.
A monument marks the landing site of the Belgian nuns who founded, in 1904, St. Paul University Dumaguete, the first institution of the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres in the Philippines. The Boulevard’s northernmost stretch curves past Silliman Hall towards the Dumaguete pier. The ship carrying Dr. Jose Rizal to his Dapitan exile was said to have briefly dropped anchor here, during which Dr. Rizal walked along the Boulevard to visit with the family of Dr. Jose Longa. The Boulevard parallels a row of some the City’s finest hotels and restaurants, and landmark residences such as those of former Provincial Governors Don Miguel and Don Julian Teves, and Don Mariano F. Perdices.

Caves

The are numerous caves throughout the entire Province but extensive karst phenomena in Mabinay ensured its claim to being the CaveTown of Negros Oriental.

Over 400 caves are said to exist in Mabinay. A Dutch-Belgian expedition identified 45 of these, including Odloman (8,870 meters long), Panligawan (143 meters), Pandalihan (282 meters), Baliw (769 meters) Mambajo (326 meters) and Bulwang (155 meters). Spelunkers will also want to explore those found in Bayawan City and La Libertad.

Waterfalls

Negros Oriental’s tourism assets are refreshing for the waters that cascade down rugged mountainsides into popular swimming calderas.

Among these are Casaroro and Pulangbato in Valencia; the towering Niludhan Falls in Bayawan City, Pagsalsalan in Ayungon; Guihulngan City’s Kinayan; Balangawan in Siaton.

Canlaon City is awash with waterfalls such as Inihawan Enchanted Falls, Quipot, Pantao, and Padudusan which created a natural water slide.

Balanan Falls is a prominent feature of the Balanan mountain retreat in Siaton.

Beaches

Negros Oriental is endowed with over a hundred kilometers of white, golden, or dark sand beaches. Each of the 21 coastal municipalities and cities has its own unique and scenic shore. Canlaon City and the municipalities of Valencia, Pamplona and Mabinay, located in the interiors, have none, but have other equally attractive sites to offer.

Among the most frequented beaches in the Province are Manjuyod’s White Sand Bar, Kan Upe Cove of Apo Island, Agan-an and Cangmating beaches in Sibulan. Popular resort beaches include Antulang and Tambobo Bay in Siaton, Talisay Beach in Bacong, Wuthering Heights in San Jose; Silliman and Melrose beaches in Dumaguete City, Bulado Beach in Guihulngan.
